A Draft Is Not A Final Manuscript.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having completed your story, realise it's not yet a manuscript. I am not sure how the Oxford English Dictionary defines a "manuscript". Candidly, this is not the issue I faced. The issue is that once you have written a story with chapters, beginning middle and end, it's still a raw product.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially, I made the mistake of showing my "raw product" to anyone who took an interest. This is a flawed notion. Distributing uncopyrighted, unproofed work to someone who you don't know well, and has little interest in supporting your efforts, is tauntamount to literary suicide.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also publishing directly on the Net is open to question, since this content is "Public Domain" unless you copyright. My guide to painless copyrighting can be found &lt;a href="http://writersblocktower.blogspot.com/2008/04/support-page-traditional-publishing.html"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the Net an author will not have the backup of an experienced publisher or agent. Readers may support online writers, but I am specifically referring to authors publishing in the traditional paperback fiction markets, please note.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Your Raw Product Needs Attention.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is what I call the proofing and indexing phase. It's not complicated. Even if you got straight A's in English Language and Literature, you still need a trusted pair of eyes to proof (systematically correct) your work because a good writer focuses on writing, not final presentation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The outcome of proofing will be you have a more polished, readable product for readers, including those all-important reviewing agents and prospective publishers. (Although over-drafting should be avoided. Two drafts is recommended as sufficient by Stephen King in his excellent book "On Writing", for example).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please note, it's the &lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;final draft&lt;/span&gt; you want to give your proofer. Passing a proofer a first draft will slow down a final draft being produced. Due to the possibility of re-drafting and re-proofing becoming necessary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By indexing, I mean simple chapter indexing at the beginning of your story. For example:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Chapter 1 - In The Beginning &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Chapter 2 - Let There Be Light&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Chapter 3 - Endgame&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is especially useful for stories above 20,000 words. In my novella, for example, I incorrectly numbered one of my chapters, affecting the numbering of all chapters that followed. I realised a simple chapter index acts as a map, so the chapters can be located quickly when final drafting and proofing occurs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Use A Recent Word-processor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This may sound obvious, but for writers like me without state-of-the-art computers and software, its an important point. Because formatting, saving and printing your magnus opus becomes a significant factor later. You may have spent two years compiling your masterpiece, unless it can be read, saved and printed easily by publishers, printing firms and typesetters, not forgetting yourself and your proofer, your efforts will be hampered.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I recommend all manuscripts be written in 12pt Arial, page-numbered, single-sheet with  double-spacing, unless publishers and agents specifically require other formatting. (It's worth asking in advance if no-one makes this clear!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Final Thoughts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Besides the wonderful &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.acblack.com/Department/default.asp?dept_id=8"&gt;"&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Writers' &amp;amp; Artists' Yearbook&lt;/span&gt;"&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;, the only other book I highly recommend serious writers read is Stephen King's &lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/onwriting.html"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"On Writing"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. Whether one is a SK Fan or not, anyone who argues that King has not been at the top of his profession for over twenty years, cannot have checked the best-seller lists.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"On Writing"&lt;/span&gt; represents an honest, contemporary account about the creative writer's journey from unknown to best-selling author. He covers important matters including editing, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;writing credits&lt;/span&gt; and the "toolbox" of skills needed. He includes examples, common errors to avoid and personal recollections that are worth their weight in gold to any aspiring author.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/sksixrules.html"&gt;King's Six Key Writing Rules&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope I have written a useful, concise guide. The publisher asked for one a page in length, so my first point is that synopses for publishers will usually be no longer, unless your publisher or agent has &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;special requirements&lt;/span&gt;. (That's if one is requested at all).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was not that familiar with writing them, so I looked online for guides. (There's many helpful ones on the Net). I discovered the fundamental elements of a synopsis are the following:-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Include your main characters and their relationship to each other (Eg. friends)&lt;br /&gt;2. Set the scene (Also known as an &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;opener&lt;/span&gt;).&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Describe the main action of opening events in a concise form (Eg. Someone is in trouble).&lt;br /&gt;4. Hint at possible conclusions, but encourage the reader to imagine what these will be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are my examples including reasons for selection.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Star Wars - A New Hope. (Written by George Lucas)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ubiquitous written openers that appear at the beginning of Star Wars movies are perfect examples of short, engaging synopses. They create suspense, offer essential information about the coming story and provide an &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;epic feel &lt;/span&gt;so audiences can use their imaginations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . .&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;During the battle rebel spies manage to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate secret weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armoured battle station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Pursed by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, the custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy. . ."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This synopsis has a short informative opener "civil war" , then sets up dramatic tension between the two main groups in the story "rebels" and "empire". Interestingly, only two plot elements are mentioned, "plans" that have been stolen and the pursuit of Princess Leia by "agents". Infact, the initial plot centres around two robots that find themselves stranded on a remote desert world. In this case, the synposis writer has only given two introductory plotting details, but this is arguably enough to set the scene.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, I find the exclusion of many leading characters in this synposis telling. The writer has resisted the temptation to mention central figures, although again, arguably for the purposes of a synopsis, this was not necessary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Christine. (Written By Stephen King)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've included this synopsis because it has a different tone to that of Star Wars. Although its just as engaging, the approach is graphic and driven rather than epic and expansive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"Christine, blood-red and fat finned, was twenty. Her promise lay in her past. Greedy and big, she was Arnie's obsession, a '58 Plymouth Fury. Broken down but not finished. There was still power in her - a frightening power that leaked like sump oil, staining and corrupting. A malign power that corroded the mind and turned ownership into Possession."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Here, King manages to encapsulate the essense of the story for readers. He mentions the central characters and their relationship (classic rule of synopsis writing) and conveys this in an intimate, driven way (perfect for gripping horror). No plotting details are mentioned at all, although these are infered rather cleverly, leaving readers to imagine what might occur in the coming narrative.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Analysis:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the selected examples above, three important points to good synopsis writing emerge. The tone of a forthcoming story is important to establish (epic, intense, romantic) as well as describing opening events concisely. Central characters need to be introduced, though one can resist the temptation to mention all of them. Since many companies provide manuals and guides in the e-book format to support customers, I was familiar with them. (Although I thought of these helpful guides as PDF files, rather than 'ebooks'. However, the terms appear to be interchangable).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PDF stands for Portable Document Format released by Adobe® Systems in 1993. Microsoft's competing file format is known as LIT (a simple abbreviation of literature). From an e-book production and sales point of view, the evidence suggests giving customers the option to download either PDF e-books, or LIT e-books is a wise decision.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Producing Quality E-books &amp;amp; Samplers:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since I cannot see the point of producing throwaway publications, I researched ebook production methods indepth. Optimization and ebook layout incorporating high-resolution graphics, animations and sound are &lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;key&lt;/span&gt; to attracting online audiences. In some ways, I believe many e-publishers are missing an opportunity to fully harness the powerful applications and processing capabilities of modern PCs that exist today. More thoughtful commentators suggest e-book publication is a &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;niche market. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;(In the factual "how-to" and technical solutions sectors).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;There is strong evidence to support this suggestion, although after further research there are encouraging signs e-fiction markets are &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;growing&lt;/span&gt; and &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;sustainable&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Example Of Fiction E-book Sales Success:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Plant By Stephen King - Released in two parts as e-books.&lt;br /&gt;Part 1 - The Plant : Sales 172,000 people paid $1.00 each&lt;br /&gt;Part 2 - The Plant : Sales 74,000 people paid $1.00 each&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Source: 'USA Today' &amp;amp; 'Your Guide To Ebook Publishing Success' by James Dillehay (2001)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is also a trend towards &lt;/span&gt;consumers moving towards less text-based multimedia formats. From my point of view, visual preferences of modern audiences are not new phenomena. In fact, I believe modern writers &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;supply&lt;/span&gt; new material to multimedia companies. (I will include film companies as "multimedia" since most of these bring together state-of-the-art graphics and visual effects, especially in sci-fi and fantasy genres).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Self-evidently, there are still viable (even loyal) audiences for book series, as the recent "Harry Potter" and "Golden Compass" successes prove. Without these books having devoted readers, its unlikely entertainment companies would have bought the film rights from the authors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The third fly in the e-book ointment is that the ubiquitous PDF file is seen as a low-value commodity. Although this is a valid point, like everything in the commercial sphere, familiarity with a product can also be an advantage. (The technology is proven and easily accessable. There is also a ready-made audience of millions of computer owners across the world who will be familiar with the PDF ebook).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In light of these findings, e-books represent a genuine publishing opportunity for new writers to showcase and sell their work. Crucially for writers, one e-book commentator mentions high online sales for e-books can lead to traditional publisher interest. This makes perfect business sense. A demand for a writer's e-book and proven sales record is self-evident and demonstrable to traditional book publishers and agents. Hence, a publishing contract (or deal) is more easily secured. A strong reason to consider e-book production and showcasing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All commercial products must be got right before being brought to market. If you are like me, you might wonder if you have the sales or marketing experience to do this? I think this issue can be less daunting when one realises you are likely to have two major advantages:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. It's likely you wrote your manuscripts on a wordprocessor (so converting documents into ebooks is a process of understanding/using what's available). The E-Publishing Route&lt;br /&gt;(Creating &lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;e-books&lt;/span&gt; : A form of inexpensive self-publishing and promotion)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Due to the fascinating potential of e-book publication, I'll write a separate article covering that topic. Here, I would like to relate a personal story focusing on traditional publishing methods, specifically exploring how writers can create genuine publishing opportunities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;In my case, &lt;a href="http://www.acblack.com/Department/default.asp?dept_id=8"&gt;"&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The Writers' &amp;amp; Artists' Yearbook&lt;/span&gt;"&lt;/a&gt; was instrumental to me submitting my first fiction manuscript. Although the contents of this useful book is not available online, A&amp;amp;C Black do have a website that promotes the book since they are its publisher. I would recommend writers seeking to publish obtain a copy each year, finances permitting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Writer's Note: On J.K. Rowling's official website, she mentions she consulted The Writers' &amp;amp; Artists' Yearbook when seeking a literary agent for her first Harry Potter manuscript.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2007, A&amp;amp;C Black were running a writing competition for unpublished authors. Since I had just written a complete, proofed 40,000 word novella, it seemed a natural progression to submit my fledgling literary efforts. They gave very clear guidelines on what they wished submitted:- two chapters of the entrant's story, plus a one sheet synopsis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Synopsis Writing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I enjoy writing synopses because of an opportunity to focus on the most exciting elements in a new story. A synopsis is similiar to the small promotional summaries included on the backcover of books, or DVD movies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A good synopsis will introduce leading characters, outline their situation and establish a tone. In effect, a useful showcase for your story's themes. Readers are looking for excitement, characters with whom they identify and gripping drama. This is your opportunity to show readers what's on offer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://writersblocktower.blogspot.com/2008/03/good-synopsis-writing-examples.html"&gt;Examples of synposes&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;Before sending off my two chapter taster and synposis, I copyrighted. There are different ways an author can do this; including consulting a solicitor or copyright specialist. I focus here on the low-cost method mentioned to me by a published poet (who also happened to work in a Law Firm!) This method, I should point-out, has not been tested in Law, but offers more protection to a writer than not copyrighting at all!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Painless Copyright.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Go to a printing firm with a CD-ROM copy of your formatted story. (There are many high-street firms around now who printout good quality, low-cost manuscripts). Ask for two copies of your manuscript to be printed. One for copyright, one for submission to the prospective publisher.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Note: You could print out your entire manuscript on your own home printer of course. However, from what I can ascertain, going to a printing shop is a cheaper option).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Put a printed (hardcopy) version of your story in a suitable envelope, seal the envelope well with tape and visit the Post Office. Ask the Post Office to send the item back to you via "Recorded Delivery". When you receive the manuscript at your home address, store it in a safe place and leave it unopened.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You now have independent proof your story is written on a particular date. You can now legitimately add the © symbol to manuscripts you send out, while your "master copy" remains on your shelves as a safeguard against infringements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The traditional copyright symbol, as seen in most published books, appears in this format:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Copyright © [Your Name Here] 2007 (Or whatever year you copyrighted)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope you find my personal account of a recent publishing opportunity helpful. Since I did not secure a literary agent or deal, my story is by no means foolproof. There are many books (and possibly online guides) that explore this topic ad infinitum. It's really good at doing this and you can help that happen. Most crashes, freezes and slowdowns are caused by the files on your PC being disordered, corrupt or missing. Here are the programs I recommend to stop the rot:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Microsoft Scandisk ®&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Running this program once a week will keep your file directories in good order.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Microsoft Defrag ®&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Run this after scandisk once a month, so your hard-disk "head" can find data efficiently. (Defragmentation takes awhile on modern hard-disks so patience is needed, its worth it.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Writer's Note: Symantec's "System Works" (Which includes the impressive Norton Utilities) has a defrag program called "Speed Disk". This is even better than Microsoft Defrag due to an additional  "optimize swapfile" feature.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"&gt;2. Your System Disk&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your system disk is the best resource to replace missing or corrupt system files. It's the CD-ROM you should have received with your PC (If purchased second-hand its a good idea to ask if the seller will include their original system disk in the sale). (It's also known as an "o/s disk", "windows disk" or "oem disk").&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Registry Cleaning &amp;amp; Optimisation (Update)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Registry files are used by your operating system to organise data and programs. This file is enormous on modern PCs, so clearing it of invalid (and sometimes illegitmate) entries will mean less computer freeze, faster startup and fewer error messages. Optimisation, after running a registry cleaner, removes " data holes" and compacts the registry file which can then be "read" faster by your PC during startup. (Microsoft Registry Checker is recommended for optimisation. Backing up your registry file before optimising is advisable).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How To Back Up Your Registry File:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Click the Windows "Start" Button&lt;br /&gt;2. Select "Run" (A dialogue box will open where one can enter program names)&lt;br /&gt;3. Enter "Regedit" (A simple program supplied with Microsoft operating systems)&lt;br /&gt;4. Press "OK" (Registry Editor will load in a new window)&lt;br /&gt;5. Click "Registry" at the top of the screen (pulldown menu)&lt;br /&gt;6. Select "Export Registry File" from this pulldown menu&lt;br /&gt;7. A new dialogue box will open, asking you to save a .reg file to your hard disk.&lt;br /&gt;8. Writer recommends giving the reg file a name including date &amp;amp; year, so you can tell easily when you last backed it up (Eg: May21-2008).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Update 2008&lt;/span&gt;: Writer's recommendation. (Although personally, I still enjoy buying secondhand from market stalls or charity shops. Big bookstores, however, are better for sourcing must-have "out of print" or more specialised titles).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A keen collector since boyhood, I now have around 200 titles, ranging from victorian hardbound volumes, 70s paperbacks and newer series, such as the Harry Potter paperbacks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've written this article to share my knowledge of finding, maintaining and enjoying paperbacks and hardbacks. There is a definite way to add value to one's collection, although rare manuscripts and early handmade books are a specialised field needing careful research. Even academic study.&lt;br /&gt;As such, this article focuses on general collecting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Writer's Guide - Purchasing Secondhand Books:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Bear in mind value is added to books in good condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This, in fact, enhances one's enjoyment of a collection. If a book has a broken spine, suffers from &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxing"&gt;foxing&lt;/a&gt; (discolouration of pages) or has tears and creases, although all these damages can be repaired. (A fairly specialised process requiring book-binding skills). It's worth noting; buying secondhand books without these common defects adds instant value to your collection.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, a brief inspection of cover, page and spine condition is a task worth undertaking. I've also been known to ask if more than one copy of a book is available, if the one on sale seems too damaged.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. It's worth having a clear idea of what you wish to collect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example, I am very keen on victorian bibles, victorian poetry books, 70s paperbacks and series of books by particular authors. Maintaining an eagle-eyed vigil when in secondhand and charity shops, or at book fairs, for one's preferred titles is very rewarding. Because booksellers are often not going to be as passionate as you when it comes to particular titles or authors. Therefore, many a bargain and rare find can be found on bookhunts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Best Practise For Book Storage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am sure you have been in a bookstore, or at a friend's house, where you've come across a mysterious pile of books stacked on top of each other, left in attics, hallways and outhouses. So, the first suggestion (which may sound entirely obvious) is invest in correctly-sized shelving. Your book collection will thank you for it!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Firstly, shelving allows you to see all the titles you have available, plus makes them readily accessable to be enjoyed. (Even shown-off when friends or family visit). Books stacked on top of each other can lead to broken spines. Standing books vertically on a shelf ensures this does not occur. Books also benefit from being housed in an airy room (at room temperature); while keeping them out of direct sunlight reduces colour fading.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consigning your books to any kind of damp, dirty cold environment, incorrectly stacked, will devalue them almost completely. Mildew, foxing and spine breakages will occur. If there is a rare first edition amongst them by a highly-favoured collectable author or poet, an opportunity to make thousands of pounds will be lost.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Understanding What You Have.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fairly refined worlds of antiquarian book-collecting and bibliography, although fascinating ones, are certainly ones which most of us will not know well. Research is everything in these fields, plus understanding particular markets, such as medieval literature, religious literature and early handwritten manuscripts. There are various entertaining stories of determined bookcollectors searching their whole lives, just to trace one particularly valuable must-have title.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For most of us, we'll be more interested in first editions we might own and which paperbacks and hardbacks are collectable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Identifying First Editions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Definition:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A first edition is defined as the first "print-run", or "printing" of a released title. Second printings can also be defined as first editions, if no significant alterations to typeset and cover were made. Most serious collectors, however, are interested in what are called 1st/1st's (first edition, first printing). Generally, hardback 1st/1st's are more valuable in monetary terms, than their paperback counterparts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Identification:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some first editions, or limited editions, will be named as such on the copyright page usually located at the front of books. Other important details (for collectors) are also located here, such as printing run, owner copyright, credits, copyright permissions, cataloguing details and ISBN number.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Writer's note: The internet can be a boon to establishing true dates of first editions by consulting an author's bibliography. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If the copyright page does not state which edition the book is, the publisher uses a variety of methods on the same page which are useful to collectors. These are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Publisher Printing Number - Examples:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"&gt;1&lt;/span&gt; 3 5 7 10 8 6 4 (A first edition due to 1 being the first number indicated)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt; 5 7 9 11 3 2 1 (A second edition due to 2 being the first number indicated)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or, a reverse number system is sometimes preferred. Example:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 &lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"&gt;1&lt;/span&gt; (A first edition due to 1 being the terminating number)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Instead of "First Edition", some publishers indicate "First Impression" or "First Printing".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some publishers indicate "First Edition" then the year of printing, if no subsequent printing dates are indicated, you have a first edition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some publishers indicate "No further printings" or use the abbreviation NAP (No additional printings).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are rare exceptions where none of the above information is stated, except date of publication. In these cases, true first edition dates have to be established by checking the author's bibliography online, or at one's local library.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do You Have Collectable Books?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This tends to be a subjective question, since different books and authors appeal to different collectors. Although, most experts and avid book-collectors will agree, collecting what you enjoy is the best approach, as literary collections become more valuable over time (as book and comic series go out of print).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Internet searches can establish trends and prices being paid for First Editions of sought-after titles. And, like most collectables, condition is a major factor that determines worth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A good example of how the modern, fiction collectors market works can be demonstated with the Harry Potter Series:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Harry Potter &amp;amp; The Goblet Of Fire" first editions are not particularly valuable (because so many were printed). Whereas a first edition "Harry Potter &amp;amp; The Philosopher's Stone" was a print-run of only 500. ("Doc" files become "LIT" files using this software. LIT files can then be distributed and viewed by Microsoft Reader (Microsoft's alternative to Adobe Reader).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.microsoft.com/reader/developers/downloads/sdk.mspx"&gt;Microsoft's Ebook Security Tool&lt;/a&gt;  (Free)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This software appears to be the application that applies DRM security to LIT ebooks. Microsoft have a licencing agreement for commerical use of this product. I will research this further and post my findings. Non-commerical use can remain unlicensed. Has a useful forum for users.&lt;br /&gt;Does not appear to edit PDF files, but includes wonderful features like 128bit encryption, compression and permission-setting to protect author content.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The primary focus of &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;ebook creation products&lt;/span&gt; is how securely ebooks made with these can be distributed &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;without interfering&lt;/span&gt; with reader satisfaction. My researches suggest each product &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;must be tested&lt;/span&gt;. Here is how I approach the design and writing process. Quality is at the centre of my objectives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Basic Standards:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Pictures displayed here are optimised and enhanced jpegs or gifs using ACDSee ™ Version 3.1. Benefits to guests are faster page loading.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. All files here are scanned for viruses and spyware &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;before &lt;/span&gt;upload to blogger or my sister server site at Googlepages­.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. All written content included here is proofed for spelling errors and re-written where unclear or grammatically suspect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. All links included are checked they remain operational, current and go to sites that do not load suspicious 'scripts', spyware or annoying popups.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"Advert-Free"&lt;/span&gt; Ethos:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's no evidence I can find that advertising on websites improves a visitor's experience. On the contrary, annoying pop-ups and adverts immaterial to a site's aims drive me away.  Products and services that could yield significant benefits for guests should be carefully reviewed. So, I will consider a section here at WBT on that basis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Avoiding Bad Design:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I appreciate sites that have clear, well-structured design which &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;encourages&lt;/span&gt; easy navigation with thoughtful colour schemes. So, I am sure you do, too. What I found hampered my efforts are two basic facts of life:-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. I am not a highly skilled web-designer.&lt;br /&gt;2. I do not have indepth knowledge of the best hosts (platform to distribute content).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The way I overcame these hurdles was by researching the best designs, blogger sites and tutorial sites I could find online and &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;implementing their principles&lt;/span&gt;. I also asked friends and family who run websites for tips.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Best Designs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My findings on this topic suggest that &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;homepages &lt;/span&gt;should be kept simple and informative. A welcoming picture of the site owner and introduction stating clear site aims appears to be appreciated by visitors, as is a clear menu structure. Overuse of animation and graphics are not favoured and can cause slow page-loading, or even browser freeze.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I recommend Photoshop ™ Software to make a more professional graphic-header due to its feature-rich functions. Some tutoring is needed to use Photoshop effectively. Many tutorials can be found online although, I personally, was disappointed with their lack of clarity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blogger Community Sites:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are some wonderful ones available online to assist new bloggers.  A modicum of patience is needed if one is new to coding in XHTML. (In fact, gaining the necessary XHTML skills and experimenting with template, image presentation and graphics took me a year to master).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blogger sites I find  particularly helpful are :&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://tips-for-new-bloggers.blogspot.com/"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://help.blogger.com/"&gt;Blogger Help Forums&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Extensive database with searchable help groups that are a goldmine for new bloggers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://weblensblogs.blogspot.com/"&gt;Random Bytes - Weblens Blog&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pam Blackstone's well-written, informative site that I found invaluable when re-designing and understanding the &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;minima html template. &lt;/span&gt;Pam clearly describes considerations such as implementing header logos and column inclusion on blogger homepages.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.bloggerbuster.com/"&gt;Bloggerbuster&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An improvement blog I wish I'd discovered earlier. Like Pam Blackstone, Amanda Fazani is an experienced writer and it shows. Superb range of articles, clear coding examples, practical and thorough. Nominated for Best Blog Design. Demonstates the potential of blogsites. Bookmarkable all day long.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Website Implementation - Technology &amp;amp; Skills Required:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) &amp;amp; XHTML (Extensible Markup Language)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The code our browsers process when we visit webpages. A basic knowledge of "markup" goes a long way towards improving &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;webguest experience&lt;/span&gt;. There are many basic guides online, although its worth noting "New Blogger" (sometimes still referred to as "Beta Blogger") requires XHTML (sometimes referred to as XML) inline with W3C's coding standards: &lt;a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/"&gt;XHTML 1.0 Strict&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A superb online tutorial in XHTML exists &lt;a href="http://it.maconstate.edu/tutorials/XHTML/"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-size:85%;" &gt;Writer's Note: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-size:85%;" &gt;My approach at Writers Block Tower is to work towards better XHTML validation for the benefit of visiting guests. To do this I utilize: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-size:85%;" &gt;&lt;a href="http://validator.w3.org/"&gt;W3C XML Parser&lt;/a&gt; (A markup error checker)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;CSS - Cascading Stylesheet Specification&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;CSS (widely called cascading style sheets) add function, style and colour to one's website. I, personally, found the coding of these beyond my expertise. There's alot of information about CSS on the Net, but not much I could find for beginners. CSS integrates with XHTML on one's chosen template.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Flash ™ Authoring Tool.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A script technology program that adds animations and video/audio to websites. Although this software is used on many websites (particularly professional ones) I struggled with it. I was also hampered from running the program on my PC, due to my outdated operating system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best way to learn flash programming, I am reliably informed, is by installing the &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;flash authoring tool &lt;/span&gt;on one's PC, accessing the help files and experimenting. Microsoft Windows ™ XP will be needed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Later Versions Of The Flash Authoring Tool are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Macromedia ™ Flash Basic 8 - (Released 2005)&lt;br /&gt;Adobe ™ Flash CS3 Professional - (Released 2007)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Writer's Note: The Flash Authoring Tool should not be confused with the much smaller &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;flash player &lt;/span&gt;program&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;that modern browsers utilize to play flash content.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Browser Compatibility:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's a courtesy to ensure one's website works well with all browsers available. It's not that difficult to find and test xhtml code and javascript that works across the browser platforms. The film and TV series do not succeed in encompassing his breath-taking intergalactic vision. Concepts explored through the engaging stories are often original and contemporary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The great strength of this book and the ones that followed is Adams ability to demystify complex scientific and philosophical ideas. He often does this with tongue-in-cheek humour that debunks the seriousness of  the science fiction genre itself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Hearts In Atlantis (Stephen King)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/HeartsInAtlantis.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border: medium none ; width: 115px; height: 139px;" src="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/HeartsInAtlantis.jpg" alt="Hearts In Atlantis Front Cover" title="Hearts In Atlantis Front Cover" /&gt;       &lt;/a&gt;           &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;First published: 1999&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Few american authors can write about their own country's prejudices and realities in quite such a powerful way as Mr King. Although he's famous for his horror stories, this book demonstrates King's (possibly under-rated) talent as a master craftsman of fiction itself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I cannot fault many books SK has produced, leading right back to his incredible debut novel &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Carrie&lt;/span&gt; in 1974. Works like this one, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Shawshank Redemption&lt;/span&gt; and &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The Green Mile&lt;/span&gt; put King on a level footing with Dickens, due to the way he can show us the bitter-sweet human condition and create meaningful, memorable characters and situations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have chosen &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Hearts In Atlantis&lt;/span&gt; due to King's exploration of American Society in the 1950s and 60s. Unusually, the book also hints at autobiographical themes.  The stories he weaves together here are cleverly-built, gripping and touching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus (Mary Shelley)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/Frankenstein1831Edition.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border: medium none ; width: 115px; height: 139px;" src="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/Frankenstein1831Edition.jpg" alt="Frankenstein, 1831 Edition" title="Frankenstein, 1831 Edition" /&gt;       &lt;/a&gt;           &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;First published: 1818&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Astonishing, beautifully-written masterpiece giving rise to a whole new genre of fiction-writing; namely the &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;gothic novel&lt;/span&gt;. The fact Mary did all this before age twenty makes the breadth and depth of &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Frankenstein&lt;/span&gt; an uncanny literary achievement. Here, Mary keenly explores potent scientific ideas in a human and gritty way. She cleverly exposes the flaws of scientific arrogance, the human cost of misapplied scientific progress and delivers a memorable, dramatic tale.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The engaging opening chapter of a sea captain recounting the discovery of Frankenstein found half-dead, out in the snowy polar wastes, is one of the most memorable I have read.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This work is still relevant today with the rise of genetic engineering. A fitting testament to Mary's prophetic vision she illustrates with masterful prose throughout the book. Reasons for writing this article are threefold. Firstly, to share my joy and interest in guitars themselves. Secondly, I've included tips for restoration. Thirdly, I have included hard-to-find information on the Kay Brand of 70s electric guitars for the benefit of collectors.  Most examples of these appear to be found in the USA. (The home of the original Kay Brand).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Christine – My Haunted Love Affair&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I found “Christine” dangling from a ceiling at a friend’s Rehearsal Studio. One of her golden control knobs was missing and strings* needed replacing. Additionally, some of her screws and metal components were showing signs of corrosion. Surprisingly, her bodywork and pickups were in good order, although somewhat hidden by layers of nicotine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My Dark Muse kindly agreed that I could restore her. I did so with care due to my fascination with her alluring six effects switches, not to mention “beefy” weight, chunky pickups,  pearloid neck inlay and a surprisingly good “action” for a Les Paul Copy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/KayFront3.JPG"&gt;&lt;img style="border: medium none ; width: 115px; height: 200px;" src="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/KayFront3.JPG" alt="Kay Guitar Front" title="Kay Guitar Front" /&gt;       &lt;/a&gt;           &lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/KayBack3.JPG"&gt;&lt;img style="border: medium none ; width: 115px; height: 200px;" src="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/KayBack3.JPG" alt="Kay Guitar Back" title="Kay Guitar Back" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;My local guitar parts  man, Steve, informed me her "imperial" screws are no longer manufactured. So, I made-do with metric equivalents to inhibit further corrosion. Replacing her missing control knob was an easier affair. Steve stocked these. They aren't expensive to replace. (Curiously, modern Gibson knobs are slightly different in design to 70s Kay originals. I didn't notice this anomaly until I attached the new one. However, it's hardly distingushable).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Lem Oil" was used to restore her wonderful rosewood neck, while the correct type of guitar polish** (recommended on Gibson's website) was used to restore her luxuriant "sunburst" body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had a breakthrough this year (2007) discovering her mystical origins. Due to the efforts of Kay Specialists "Mongrel Guitars". After contacting them, they supplied me with useful information about the "Kay Label" and put me in touch with Kay Sellers on Ebay. (Most sellers are in the US and few in number). One US-based Kay Seller informed me Christine is, in fact, a Les Paul Gibson Copy (With built-in effects). She was made in a Far Eastern Factory around 1978 under license to the then owner of the Kay brand. Hence the mystery of her "Made In Korea" label was finally solved. Since the original Kay factory was located in Chicago, USA my initial researches often came to perplexing dead-ends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/Kay_Head3.JPG"&gt;&lt;img style="width: 115px; height: 200px;" src="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/Kay_Head3.JPG" alt="Kay Guitar Head &amp; Logo" title="Kay Guitar Head &amp; Logo" /&gt;                    &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/Kay_Effects_Panel3.JPG"&gt;&lt;img style="border: medium none ; width: 115px; height: 200px;" src="http://fantasywriter65.googlepages.com/Kay_Effects_Panel3.JPG" alt="Kay Guitar Effects Panel" title="Kay Guitar Effects Panel" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Today, five of her six wonderful "sound effects" are fully operational. (For any Kay restorer reading this article, the 9v battery must be replaced to power the "effects" switches.) For reasons beyond my current technical understanding "whirlwind" remains elusively silent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;. . . Sometimes late at night, I get the feeling she enjoys my attentions so much, she plays better!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-size:85%;" &gt;Footnotes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Size 11 strings seem to work best for playing. (Known to many guitarists as "11s")&lt;br /&gt;** Dr Stringfellow's "Kyser" Polish restored her nitrous finish to a high lustre. (Ordinary house polish is not suitable.
